The following two texts have been written as introductions and vehicles for individual exploration of the fascinating subject of cartography. They are not academic essays. I have merely recorded, hopefully in an entertaining fashion, what I have learnt about various map-related subjects and theories and my own thoughts on them.
Where are maps taking us? concerns itself with conventional cartographic practice. No attempt is made to cover all areas of this incredibly broad subject, instead I have concentrated on topics relevant to this project. There are many links throughout the text connecting to websites and essays for more in-depth study.
Maps for maps' sake introduces the long-debated question of whether cartography is an art or a science or both, including my own opinion on the topic. It goes on to look at artists and how maps and map-related technology have inspired them, concentrating on 6 in particular. Again links are scattered throughout.
